What is the LMI Construction Forecasts website?

The LMI Construction Forecasts website is a component of the CSC's Labour Market Information (LMI) Program. It consists of a westrong-based delivery system that enables industry and other key stakeholders to access forecast data on an ongoing basis to help them forecast construction investment activity, employment demand and supply in the residential and non-residential sectors.

What specific information is found on the website?

The Construction Forecasts website provides comprehensive supply and demand forecast data, customized graphs and links to other relevant data sources.

What is the LMI Program?

The LMI Program uses the most advanced and detailed industry model available in Canada to accurately forecast the future supply of construction labour in this country. It is based on forecasting models and approaches pioneered by the Construction Owners Association of Alberta and the Commission de la construction du Québec.

What is the source of the data provided by the LMI Program and the Construction Forecasts website?

Statistics Canada is the key data source. Information is also gathered in 14 regional markets in all Canadian provinces by industry and federal and provincial governments, the LMI regional network, including labour/management owners associations from all provinces and territories, and a national owners/users of construction committee.

What questions does the data answer?

Data on the Construction Forecasts website and in CSC's Construction Looking Forward reports answers three key questions about Canada's construction industry: What trades and occupations skills are required to meet the needs of the construction industry? How many workers are needed? Where can these workers be found? It also identifies international, national and provincial economic conditions that affect the industry, building trends and major projects on the horizon and labour force profiles for 31 occupations, including trades, managers and related groups by province/territory.

How do the construction industry and other stakeholders use the data?

This information is used by labour groups, contractors, owners, estimators, national and provincial/territorial organizations, training providers and government policy makers to predict labour market trends and personnel requirements, project the movement of trade labour from province to province and develop appropriate training and recruitment strategies to ensure there is an adequate supply of skilled tradespersons to meet the needs of Canada's construction industry. With this knowledge, members of the construction industry can confidently invest in new construction, knowing Canada has the workforce necessary to deliver projects on time and on budget.
